Christmas has arrived at St Katharine’s-by-The-Tower with a giant floating yuletide tree with a-thousand fairy lights switched on for six weeks of festival celebrations.

The historic St Katharine Docks at Wapping, just a little downriver from Tower Bridge, had the big switch-on last night for revellers with Britain’s only floating Christmas tree.

The arboreal centrepiece in the marina has been topped with a 5ft tall star and lit up with tiny lights.

The illumination which is on display until the New Year was put together by eight men taking 16 hours to assemble and weighs more than five-and-a-half tonnes.

Luckily the ancient Archimedes principal of ‘liquid displacement’ still holds water nowadays and the timber tonnage won’t be doing a ‘Titanic’ sinking in the dock.

It’s what they call “a eureka moment” for St Kat’s.
