Families on a housing estate in London’s Docklands half-way through its reconstruction have still managed to hold their annual summer fete with music and barbecue during Wednesday’s heatwave.
The Union Wharf estate on the Isle of Dogs is undergoing extensive regeneration with the 190 dwellings built in the 1970s being replaced with 400 modern updated homes, more than double its original size.
The families have been taking part in consultations to select their new kitchen units and even choose names for the future blocks.
They are being offered a choice for the interior of their homes by East Thames Housing, which runs the estate.
The first phase of the redevelopment was completed in September, while the rest will be finished by the summer of 2018—in time for an even bigger barbecue.
Children from Cubitt Town Junior School nearby visited the construction site earlier this month to see the progress and learn about site safety.
The youngsters met ‘Ivor Goodsite’, the construction industry’s mascot, to learn about safety around building sites.
