Abayomi reflects on league point

Tower Hamlets boss Ade Abayomi said it was a case of ‘one point gained’ rather than ‘two points dropped’ after his side twice took the lead in their 2-2 draw with Essex Senior League rivals Wadham Lodge on Monday.

Hamlets took the lead on 17 minutes as Omar Keita capitalised on sloppy defending by the visitors, but Wadham responded just before the break from the penalty spot.

Then came the game’s controversial moment, as Tyler Springer was sent off for two bookable offences, much to the frustration of his manager.

Abayomi said: “It was a very tough game, the sending-off was a turning point. I think the first one was a dive, but the second was dissent so he only has himself to blame.

“We could have taken the three points if we didn’t get a man sent off so I’m frustrated. But we have a young side and it’s a learning curve for the players.

“I’m also happy, though, as we have put a stop to the losing run.”

Keita scored again 10 minutes from time, but Wadham again equalised instantly to ensure the points were shared.

Hamlets, following their FA Cup and FA Vase exits, now sit in 14th place having won one, drawn one and lost two.

And Abayomi feels they should have picked up more points, based on their performances, adding: “If you would have asked me first half, I would have said it’s two points dropped, but as we had 10 men, at the end of the game I’ll say it’s one point gained.

“I was happy with the draw at full time. It’s frustrating, though, because we haven’t picked up many points, but our performances haven’t been bad.”

Hamlets travel to Waltham Forest on Saturday being hosting Ilford at Mile End Stadium on Monday.

Abayomi said: “I don’t know much about Waltham Forest but Ilford, I know it’s going to be a really difficult game.

“As always, we will be prepared and try our best to get a positive result. I know we can do well against any team.”
