Although Leyton Orient showed good character to get a victory against Newport County on Saturday, Blair Turgott feels they let their standards drop.

Ian Hendon’s men made it four wins from four in League Two after goals from Paul McCallum, Jay Simpson and Dean Cox sealed a 3-2 triumph in South Wales.

They were under pressure for long periods against the Exiles, though, and had to hold on in the end to earn three points.

It wasn’t the O’s most vintage display, but they managed to maintain their 100 per cent record in the division.

Turgott, who was introduced in the 53rd minute, made his mark against Newport by assisting the winning goal and he was pleased Orient registered another success.

He said: “We have set high standards so far, everybody has as a team, but we weren’t at it against Newport.

“It is a match where we need to take a lot of lessons from, but at the end of the day it is about getting the result. We conceded two goals we are not happy about, but we got the win in the end.

“The boys showed great character to hold on. We all know it wasn’t our best performance. We went two nil up and they got it back to two all, but we showed a bit of character to come back and get the winning goal which was great and also to stick at the game.

“We did get the third goal quite early and there was a lot of time left so the boys showed great character, but Newport did ramp up the pressure and it was hard, but we did well to stick in there and get the win and not concede.”

After their Newport triumph, the Orient squad now have a week without a match to prepare for after being knocked out of the Capital One Cup in the first round.

It is a positive for Hendon and his staff to be able to have the players in training for the whole week to prepare for Saturday’s encounter with Bristol Rovers at Brisbane Road.

The O’s have played five games in the space of 14 days this season so a chance to recuperate over the next few days is well earned.

Turgott is looking forward to recharging the batteries, adding: “The games have been coming thick and fast, but it is good to have no midweek game.

“It is good to come to Newport and make it four wins from four and now we can get our rest. Once we go back into training we need to work hard and look back on the game when we get the chance.

“The squad is small so it is nice to recharge the batteries and have a little rest. We are looking forward to Saturday and hopefully we are raring to go at home with the supporters behind us. I think we have to look at it as another game and another fixture we can win.”
