Volunteers were busy tidying up the back streets under the railway arches where rubbish is always being dumped.
The 60 volunteers were taking part in Community Clear Up day in Bethnal Green to spruce up Fleet Street Hill, an out-of-the-way turning off Pedley Street used as a pedestrian cut-through to Cheshire Street.
They were joined by staff from a Whitechapel McDonald’s in Commercial Road to tackle the derelict area that’s prone to rubbish dumping from passers-by.
Community Clear Up day was launched by Local Government Minister Kris Hopkins who called on the public to lend a hand to tidy-up the streets in time for summer.
It was aimed at getting rid of litter blighting town centres, high streets, public parks and even little backwaters like Bethnal Green’s Fleet Street Hill.
McDonald’s manager Tariq Hussain said: “It’s vital that we all do as much as we can to up-keep our local area, through regular litter-picks or getting involved in larger activities like this.”
The take-away chain joined in as part of its pledge to carry out daily clean-ups around its restaurants, as signatories to Keep Britain Tidy campaign encouraging businesses to help reduce litter in the streets.
