Four giant ‘cubes for ideas’ have appeared in public parks around Shoreditch in east London asking people how green spaces can be used to benefit the community.
They appeared over the weekend at Hackney Road Recreation Ground, Hoxton Square, Charles Square and Mark Street Gardens.
The Groundwork London charity in partnership with Gensler architects and the local authority wants people to write and draw their ideas on the cubes.
The ideas will be presented after three weeks to a group of creative and entrepreneurial business folk in Shoreditch who are volunteering their time and expertise to turn the best ideas into reality.
“We want those who live and work near the parks to re-imagine the potential in these often under-used open spaces,” Groundwork’s Ben Coles explained.
“Hackney Road could host a summer café or outdoor meeting space, while Mark Street could be the perfect open-air exhibition space or community fair site.”
Some could be used for outside working, a lunch spot for office staff or outdoor space for meetings and functions, without reducing their use as public parks.
The works are being paid for out of a £90,000 grant from an environment programme for public spaces through Lottery funding.
