A demonstration against the “bedroom tax” was held outside St John on Bethnal Green Church on Saturday as part of a national day of protest to mark its first anniversary.
Students from Central Foundation Girls School who have been learning about the tax, introduced in April 2013, attended the protest organised by Tower Hamlets Benefits Justice, which included a “People’s Vote” ballot and live music.
There was also a special caricature provided by local cartoonist Tim Sanders.
Organiser Eileen Short said thousands were affected by the tax in Tower Hamlets.
She said: “Two-thirds affected nationally are people with disabilities, and Tower Hamlets has a higher than average number of disabled people. The bedroom tax should be abolished – now.”
Also protesting were Tower Hamlets Green Party.
Chris Smith, the party’s mayoral candidate for Tower Hamlets, said: “Last weekend’s demo across the country against the bedroom tax highlights the depth of feelings about this extremely unfair change to the benefits system.
“We call for a clear, determined policy to ensure that people do not lose their homes or have to relocate to another part of the country as a result of the tax”
