London’s Winter Walking Weekend will take you to some of Tower Hamlets’ lesser-known locations.
Led by expert academics from the Cultural Capital Exchange, each walk will last between one and two hours.
Dr Nadia Valman will be leading a walk at 2pm on Sunday entitled Into the Ghetto: Writing Jewish immigrant life in Victorian Whitechapel.
It will use novelist Israel Zangwill’s 1892 book Children of the Ghetto as a guide to Whitechapel, discussing the history of the area as he portrayed it.
A second walk by Dr Gil Toffell will start on Brick Lane at 4pm and look at the rarely discussed role of cinema in the communal life of migrant groups. It will investigate the life of now vanished cinema spaces.
Each walk costs £8 and can be booked online at http://bit.ly/1bk5yZH
