The regeneration of an estate in the Isle of Dogs has won a national housing award for its planning and public consultation.
The work at the New Union Wharf estate by housing association East Thames was given the award by the National Housing Awards (NHA) as the best scheme in planning.
The regeneration will cost £64 million and will replace the existing 1970s estate with 399 modern and energy efficient homes.
The NHA award recognised the consultation work East Thames carried out with residents on the estate.
Residents made key decisions on the project and voted on whether to go ahead with the regeneration using an independent ballot, which was overseen by the Electoral Reform Service.
Steve Eccles, strategic project manager at East Thames, said: “We are thrilled that our work at New Union Wharf has won the award for best scheme in planning.
“Effective resident consultation has been crucial to the success of the project so far, we are committed to giving the community a say over the future of their homes.”
The new homes will have outdoor areas including winter gardens and balconies, along with energy saving features, and will be available for social rent, shared ownership, or outright sale.
Penny Verlander, a tenant at New Union Wharf estate and chair of the estate’s tenant association, attended the awards ceremony to collect the prize with Mr Eccles.
She said: “I am delighted that New Union Wharf has won this award. Residents have worked really closely with the East Thames team and it is great to have this hard work and commitment recognised.”
