Comedienne Jo Brand is opening a pop-up festival at allotments on a housing estate in London’s East End.
She has been invited by the Lock Up Performance Art group to cut the ribbon for a new community garden and kids’ play-area at Bethnal Green’s Approach Estate on Saturday.
The group usually performs for one hour a month from a lock-up garage on the estate for families to watch from their balconies, getting its electricity from the shop opposite.
“We have 50 acts booked so far,” said organiser and university arts lecturer Jordan McKenzie who lives on the estate. “We are inviting all the artists who have presented work to come back.”
Saturday’s seven-hour festival with performance arts, Morris dancing and stalls behind James Campbell House in Old Ford Road, near Victoria Park, begins at 2pm.
