Students and elderly people joined forces to celebrate love, food and the summer solstice.
Pupils from Newham Sixth Form College (NewVIc) and residents of Hawthorn Green Nursing Home, in Redman’s Road, Stepney, performed Recipes for Romance on midsummer night’s eve on June 21.
The play, watched by family, friends and local residents, formed part of the Phakama Edible Garden Project, which was launched to bring younger and older generations together.
As part of the scheme, Phakama, an international youth arts organisation, and the students have been visiting Sanctuary Care Home since April to exchange stories, life experiences and aspirations with the elderly residents.
They have also grown an edible garden together.
Phidelima Ajao, the home’s manager, said: “The residents have enjoyed every minute of the workshops and we loved welcoming the community to our home to enjoy the performance, even with a bit of rain.”
