An exhibition of internationally-acclaimed illustrations and playful prose from artist Miroslav Sasek’s classic children’s book ‘This is London’ has opened at the iconic Tower Bridge.
His child’s-eye view of London sights, buildings and people first published in 1959 form a portrait of the metropolis which has enchanted generations of children and adults.
The printed reproductions of Sasek’s artwork shows how much or how little London has changed since the 1950s.
The exhibition is in the high-level walkways 140ft above the Thames, set against the backdrop of the incredible views of the London skyline.
Sasek died in 1980 at the age of 64, after a lifetime as a painter and illustrator. The books he wrote painted an evocative picture of some of the world’s great cities and countries.
• The exhibition runs to the end of March next year, bringing the world-famous book to life with 29 large-scale displays. Sasek’s images also include Tower of London, Billingsgate Market, St Etheblurga’s Church, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Piccadilly Circus, London Underground and Trafalgar Square. Tower Bridge Exhibition is open 10am-6pm daily, £8 (under 5s free, up to 15 £3.40, concessions £5.60).
