David Cameron aimed to tackle school sports funding shortages as he unveiled at £150million per year cash pot at Millwall Rugby Club at the weekend.
The prime minister used the club, in Millwall Park on the Isle of Dogs, as the venue to announce the extra funding for primary school sports in a bid to ensure dreams of an Olympic legacy are not dashed by the UK’s economic woes.
He said: “I want to ensure the Games count for the future too and that means capitalising on the inspiration young people took from what they saw during those summer months.”
But the rugby club’s president, MP for Poplar and Limehouse Jim Fitzpatrick, described the cash boost as “too little, too late”.
He said: “It’s great that David Cameron has chosen Millwall Rugby Club to announce new school sports funding. The club provides lots of valuable coaching to local schools and the community.
“But this last minute deal is too little and too late for school sports in Tower Hamlets and the country. More funding would’ve been welcome when the Olympic torch went out and the school term began last year.”
