An engineering student from the University of East London was one of 20 women invited to meet prospective employers at a careers event aboard the London Eye.
Natasha Hama, who is studying civil engineering at the university which has a campus in the Docklands, was a guest of utility firm EDF Energy, which was promoting a scheme called Women in Engineering while hosting its first annual “Energy Day” conference to highlight career opportunities with the company.
Industry figures show that, in 2012, just 6 per cent of the engineering workforce were women – a statistic that has remained unchanged for five years according to a study by the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Natasha and the other students were able to meet current employees, including female engineers and senior managers, and find out more about the industry.
Natasha said: “It was great to be part of the Energy Day event at the EDF Energy London Eye. As an engineering student it was an opportunity to find out about EDF Energy as an employer and the various career paths they have to offer.”
