Organisations chosen to benefit from funding raised in April’s Mayor’s Cup football tournament were presented with their cheques this week.
The tournament was backed by Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman, and included more than 70 teams and 800 players, attracting sponsorship from a range of local businesses.
The money raised has allowed 20 organisations, ranging from sports teams to residents’ associations, to receive 500 each.
One of the groups to receive a cheque at the ceremony at the Town Hall was Stepney City FC.
Akik Miah, who helps run the team, said: “This grant will help us a great deal. We aim to not just work to improve health in our community, but also reduce anti-social behaviour and break down racial barriers through sports.”
