Budding politicians walked through the corridors of power on Monday when they were given a special tour around the Houses of Parliament by an MP.

Youngsters from all year groups, who sit on the Old Palace Primary School council, were shown around the historic venue by Jim Fitzpatrick, who represents Poplar and Limehouse.

The 16 pupils meet regularly to discuss and vote on various issues at their school in St Leonard’s Street, Bromley-by-Bow.

The children visited both houses and learned about the building’s history, current affairs, and how they can get involved in the political process in the future.

Mr Fitzpatrick said: “It’s great to see schoolchildren take an interest in politics.

“These school council members have already been elected to help other pupils, which is a great achievement.

“We had lots of questions and fun today. Parliament shouldn’t scare off young people and I hope these youngsters have been inspired to get involved.”
