Hard-pressed folk in London’s East End are among Britain’s poorest money savers, says a nationwide survey of banks.
People in Tower Hamlets and neighbouring Hackney are almost at the bottom of a new league table of savers based on cash held in bank accounts.
Those in Tower Hamlets—Britain’s most deprived area—only have an average of 776 in their accounts, according to ING Direct’s savings monitor which tracks balances month-by-month. Those in neighbouring Hackney have even less, 749.
Only three areas are poorer for saving, such as Islington and Lambeth, both hovering around 750, while worst of all is central Manchester at 569.
