FLORAL tributes have been placed at the quayside where a 20-year-old man died in a Thames dock basin in suspicious circumstances.
Friends and family laid flowers in memory of Ibrahim Gharib, 20, who fell into the water at Shadwell Basin in East London. Police are treating his death as suspicious.
Ibrahim was on the quayside of the dock at Wapping with a 17-year-old girl. Police believe he may have been involved in a fight with a group of others on Thursday evening.
Emergency services including police divers, fire crews and ambulance were called to the scene after several people dialled 999. But his body wasn’t recovered for 12 hours.
The teenage girl with Ibrahim hadhead injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
A 20-year-old man was arrested at his home in East London on Friday in connection with Ibrahim’s death. He has since been released on police bail to return on April 15.
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to call the incident room at Barking under detectives from the Homicide and Serious Crime Squad on 020-8345 3734, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555111.
