YOUNG school athletes from London's deprived East End have been awarded financial and training grants to help them get to international standards.
They had to demonstrate long-term potential to succeed at International level.
More than half the awards were given to athletes aged 16 or younger.
One went to 14-year-old Nathan Hanson, a sprinter and member of Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets athletics club.
Nathan won to Under-15s 100m and 200m at the UK National championships last month and is now aiming to qualify for the 2011 Junior World championships.
They received their awards at Mile End Park leisure centre where the 57 youngsters represented a broad range of sports from athletics, table tennis, boxing, sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball and athletics.
The grants up to �1,750 from the GLL Sport Foundation, run by the company that manages leisure and sports centres for Tower Hamlets council, are for training, travel and equipment in
the next 12 months.
