FAMILIES fighting to keep their Glasshouse centre open are crystal clear about taking the battle to the Town Hall.
Tenants on the Parkview Estate in London’s East End present a petition to Tower Hamlets council on Wednesday evening (July 15) after the local authority cut off funding.
They are calling for a rethink’ over the future of Bethnal Green’s Glasshouse community centre near Victoria Park.
Their petition calls for �10,000 to keep the centre going with a full-time worker.
DESERVE BETTER’
“Our community centre deserves support from the council as an invaluable asset,” Parkview Neighbourhood Watch chair Joanne Kaschke told the East London Advertiser.
“This is not the action of a responsible council, allowing the use of a community centre without making sure the cost can be met.”
The Town Hall, which insists it has helped tenants look at “other funding opportunities,” says staff at the centre were too late submitting their application for cash.
The centre, which opened when the Parkview estate was built in the late 1950s, runs after-school clubs, toddler groups, bingo and boxing lessons as well as outings for the 500 tenants.
