Paolini showcase in east London is first for 30 years

The Whitechapel Gallery is hosting a comprehensive exhibition of pieces by Italian artist Giulio Paolini, whose career spans half a century.

Audiences will be treated to two floors of famous works including To Be or Not to Be, Delphi and a new piece created especially for the exhibition.

Gallery curator Daniel Hermann said: “If you open a book on the history of art you will find Paolini prominently featured in sections about conceptual art. Guilio Paolini is really one of the most interesting conceptual artists in the 20th century. He has been pivotal in the development in conceptual art – art that deals with ideas and the notions of art in the world.

“So far, for many, his art has only been experienced in catalogues not in the flesh.” Paolini is known for having influenced many ideas about art with his investigation into the relationship between the artist and his works.

His belief that art is not just itself in the present but is a subjective product of discourse as well as a rich tapestry of history and tradition has been a pivotal argument in conversations about conceptual art.

Daniel said: “He thinks the artist is the one who presents the work, or mediates it for an audience but isn’t necessarily responsible for its conception.”

He added that the exhibition was free, widening the audience and further completing the art.

Daniel continued: “It’s a real treat to be able to work with an artist of such international acclaim who has had such a profound influence in art history and the development of art.”
