A new gastropub called The Galvaniser’s Union will replace a disused pub in Bromley by Bow as part of redevelopment work expected to finish in January 2014.

The site of the Duke of Wellington pub at 2 Devas St is being redeveloped by Antic London, who have saved and revamped a number of London pubs that were set to be knocked down or turned into flats.

Anthony Thomas, Director of Antic London, said the work will make the new pub welcoming and modern, but will remain in keeping with the rest of the building.

He said: “It will be a good old pub, what we think a pub should be. A safe comfortable space where people want to spend time and have drinks at a reasonable price. That’s what a good pub is all about to me.”

The planning application for the redevelopment was approved by Tower Hamlets Council in June after it passed the last hurdle over its kitchen extraction.

The work will include adding double doors to the side of the building for an emergency exit.

Antic London run a string of over 30 pubs across London, including The Clapton Heart in Hackney and The Old George in Bethnal Green, and will model The Galvaniser’s Union on the others.

Anthony said: “Pubs have been around for thousands of years. They get people together for a beer, a glass of wine, a Sunday roast.

“They’re a place to go and hang out and give people a sense of belonging.”
