An energy company supplying electricity to millions of households has set up its own mobile command unit located in east London to tackle major incidents and emergencies anywhere in the South East and East of England.
The five-and-a-half ton vehicle being stationed at UK Power Networks’ East Ham depot is equipped with satellite navigation systems, remote network access, monitors and telecommunications.
“This should reassure the public that we’re treating incidents seriously,” said UK Power Networks’ Mark Fiske. “Sometimes MPs, councillors and householders turn up wanting to talk about what’s happened and this gives us a proper environment for that.”
The company has put up 130,000 for the tailor-made unit which has its own generator and floodlights and can be sent to emergencies to provide a base for the incident command. The emergency services and the National Grid already have similar command vehicles.
