“We have got to build on this victory,” says O’s youngster

Orient goalkeeper Lee Butcher hopes to give manager Russell Slade a selection headache after he emerged as the club’s Carling Cup hero on Tuesday night.

The young keeper pulled off a string of fine stops during the game and then made two penalty saves during the shoot-out as Orient made it through to the second round.

Jones has stepped up into the side as first-choice keeper Jamie Jones is out of action with a shoulder injury and Butcher is making the most of his time in the spotlight.

“We don’t know when he (Jones) will be back,” said Butcher.

“I’m just going to carry on playing and see what the manager does when he comes back.”

The former Tottenham keeper believes that the fact he played in most of the pre-season matches has helped.

“When ‘Jonesy’ did his shoulder I was told I would play the majority of the pre-season games to get me ready for the start of the season and I was delighted with that,” he said.

“You get to know your back four even more playing week in and week out in the pre-season games and it has definitely started me off well.”

Butcher hopes that Tuesday night’s shoot-out success will give Orient the momentum they need to pick up their first League One points of the season, as they face home games against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday and then Wycombe Wanderers next Tuesday night.

“We have got to kick on and improve our game for Saturday and crack on,” said Butcher. “It was a very, very big win against Southend and now we can build on this victory.”

With three Carling Cup ties in the capital cancelled on Tuesday night because of the civil unrest, Orient are monitoring the situation ahead of Saturday’s home game.

The Football League are expected to make a decision on Thursday.

“We are keeping an eye on things at the moment and we will be speaking with the police,” said chief executive Matthew Porter.

“But at the moment it’s too early to say what will happen.”
