Borough make podiums in judo, cycling, BMX and handball

Heart of Oak youngsters were among the medals for Redbridge at the London Youth games judo finals at Crystal Palace.

The girls were able to build on their recent club success as Mercedes and Summer Anegbeh won five bouts each to meet in the final and claim gold and silver respectively.

Elder sisters Angel and Crystal Anegbeh fought in the heavier categories alongside Peach James and, despite their opponentns putting up a good fight, the Redbridge girls produced some exceptional performances to win two silver and a bronze.

The Anegbeh sisters have also advanced to the Ippon League, a regional competition for highest points scoring athletes and good indicator of future talent.

Boys’ captain Morgan James and teammate Bukhari Musa enjoyed several wins on the day, only to just miss out on medals as they finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

But coaches Marvin and Trevor James praised the youngsters, saying: “They have worked hard and brought high-level performances to the floor.

“Entries in the competition are from 31 London boroughs and is why the event is so popular among young athletes starting their journey to Olympic sporting excellence.”

n Redbridge cyclists came away with a full set of medals at their finals in Lee Valley VeloPark.

Golden girl Connie Hayes finished first in the girls’ A/B race with a time of 10.25 and best lap of 2.41, as Tas Dias came 14th.

And Caelan Miller took silver in the boys’ C/D/E race in 5.16, with Noah Hobbs four seconds back for bronze.

Callum Moir was 10th in the same race, while Celesta Muna was 27th in the girls’ event.

Aidan Kerrigan (26th) and Max Blake (28th) competed in the boys’ A/B race, while Hayes and Blake performed well in the road races.

The BMX team also made it onto the podium as Lexie White won silver for the girls, with Eleanor Clough and Broghan Ward finishing inside the top eight in the A and B finals.

Bobby Tucker, Gaurav Meher, Ryan Salter, Reuben Fabian, Malachi Fabian, Cole Smith, Tom Rush, Rico Sea and Louis Tay Edwards showed their potential in the boys’ races.

The Redbridge girls’ handball team were also celebrating after winning bronze at the Copper Box.

The arena was buzzing once again with youngsters from all over the capital battling it out at the London 2012 Olympic venue.

Redbridge won their group with a total of 18 goals in four matches and beat Ealing (4-3), before being edged out 5-2 by Richmond in the semi-final.

They overcame that setback to win the bronze medal play-off against Southwark, winning 7-6, to show an improvement from last year’s quarter-final exit.
