Trouble at the London Stadium at the start of the football season led the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee to launch an investigation into safety issues in and around the Olympic Park.

I pushed for our review to look at policing of the Olympic Park as a whole because I understand that this issue affects not only those using the park, Stratford station or Westfield Stratford City, but also the growing number of local residents.

I am concerned that as the community in this area develops, and increasingly more people use the park and its surrounding areas, more will need to be done to ensure that people feel safe doing so.

My committee colleagues and I have visited the area three times, including on a match day and met a range of stakeholders to discuss how to improve safety.

We encourage closer collaboration between all agencies involved to help maintain the improvements we have seen.

On a different matter, I was pleased to second a motion to the London Assembly recently which addressed the serious issue of modern day slavery. We expressed our support for the mayor’s commitment to tackle this issue and his plans to recruit a modern day slavery ambassador for every borough.

These crimes are happening both behind closed doors across our city and in plain sight, and we need to do more to stop these practices.

We hope that by speaking out we will encourage more victims to come forward and ensure that tougher action is taken against those employers who exploit workers and the people who traffic them.
