A series of events are taking place across the borough next week as part of Carers Week.

The week, which starts on Monday, June 12, is a way to highlight the estimated 24,000 unpaid carers across the area who look after friends or family members who need assistance because of age, physical or mental illness, or disability.

These 24,000 carers take their family members, relatives or friends to appointments, help them wash, or simply keep them company.

“Carers Week provides a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the support available to carers all year round,” Councillor Clive Furness, mayoral advisor for adults and health, said.

“I would urge anyone who thinks they may be an unpaid carer to come to one of the events or contact the council, via the website or by phone to see how we can help them.”

Carers Week is a national campaign that raises awareness of the challenges these carers face. During the week, there will be numerous events that carers can take part in.

These events include carers information sessions or sessions for planning for the future. Some events even include pampering and relaxation for carers, offering massages, manicures, wellbeing advice, stress management and refreshments.

The events will take place across Newham and will have members of the Newham Carers Network and Carers Champions present. Members of these groups work with the council to think of improvements for carers.

“These people play a crucial role in our communities and deserve our upmost respect,” Cllr Furness said. “It is vital that while they are looking after others we ensure they are also provided with the help and support they need.”

Under the Care Act 2014, some carers may be eligible for support. This could be be anything from having another person support them so they could have a break or financial assistance to make their caring role easier.
