Martin: Poor finishing cost us a win

Romford boss Paul Martin was left frustrated as ‘poor finishing’ meant his side played out their third goalless draw in five games.

Boro, who drew 0-0 with Phoenix Sports for the second time in two weeks, now sit in 19th place in Ryman North with just one win from seven matches.

Martin said: “The clean sheet obviously pleased me, that’s three now in seven league games. We look comfortable at the back and if you keep clean sheets you only need to score one to win the game.

“My main concern is that we aren’t scoring enough goals. It’s frustrating, because every training session we work on finishing.”

Romford have only scored six league goals this season and Martin says their finishing needs to improve ‘quickly’.

He added: “We have to be more clinical, we need to start taking our chances.

“Against Hornchurch, we had three chances and scored two goals. On Wednesday, we had five and scored none.”

Despite their lack of goals, Martin was full of praise for his back five.

He said: “The defence and goalkeeper never get enough praise. If you win 1-0 the goalscorer gets all the plaudits.

“As we’ve been solid at the back, I want to pay special tribute to my back four and the keeper.

“Atu Ngoy made some good saves, he kept the score down, and also deserves praise,”

Boro have only lost once in their last six matches in all competitions, but they haven’t tasted victory in eight, since their 2-0 derby win at home to Hornchurch.

Martin added: “It’s another point on the board, so I’ve got to be pleased overall. I can’t fault the boys though, their work rate and effort was fantastic.”
