A man was rushed to hospital after an explosion in a manhole near a busy London station.

London Ambulance Service (LAS) was called at 8.01am today to reports of the incident at the junction of Hart Street and Mark Lane near Fenchurch Street station.

Firefighters were sent to the scene after they were told of smoke coming out of a manhole cover.

The City of London Police said a manhole had exploded.

On social media site X, one user said there were a lot of emergency services at the scene and some areas were cordoned off

LAS sent an ambulance crew, an incident response officer, an emergency planning officer and members of its hazardous area response team (HART).

Medics treated a man for minor injuries at the scene before taking him to the hospital.

A spokesperson for c2c rail said the incident did not happen close to the station and the trains were not affected.

The manager of a shop, Birleys, near Mark Lane told the Recorder that he “heard an explosion” and saw “smoke coming out”.

The incident has since been brought under control and the road has been reopened.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known.
