An Iceland supermarket in Poplar has been closed after "mouse activity" was found in the premises.

The Iceland in Chrisp Street Market on Vesey Path has been closed this week, leaving shoppers wondering why.

One Facebook user said: "Chrisp street Iceland is closed. Any idea why?"

A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets Council has since confirmed the cause of the closure.

The spokesperson said: “Environmental health officers from Tower Hamlets Council served Iceland (Poplar branch) with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice because of uncontrolled mouse activity within the premises, which posed an imminent risk of injury to health.

“The premises are now closed as a result. An application has been made to the court to decide whether the premises still pose an imminent risk to health.”

The Poplar store and Iceland have been contacted for comment, but have not yet responded.

There has been no mention of when the branch could reopen.
