Money to help people in fuel poverty is being handed to two east London support organisations by British Gas.

The Bromley by Bow centre and the Money A&E UK budget advice charity in Stratford have been given £781,000 each by British Gas Energy Trust for their advice services.

They are among 38 organisations in the UK given grants this year totalling £13 million, following a “mapping exercise” identifying charities best placed to help people avoid energy debt.

“These services have life-changing effects on people in fuel poverty,” Gas Energy Trust chair Helen Charlton said. “This funding means they can run more benefit checks, home energy surveys, education sessions and set up more household budget plans with holistic support.”

The trust has helped with grants and emergency fuel vouchers totalling £200million over the last 20 years, helping charities like the Bow centre and Money A&E that offer holistic approaches to fuel poverty by treating the causes rather than just the symptoms.
