Awards to recognise extraordinary women in Tower Hamlets are returning.

Nominations for the Tower Hamlets Women’s Awards are now open for six titles — advocate of the year, extraordinary carer, volunteer of the year, business leader, women's group of the year and outstanding young female.

The awards were started last year when the local authority set up its Women’s Commission to improve gender rights and safety.

“Women play a vital role in our communities,” executive mayor Lutfur Rahman said.

“These awards are a way that we can nominate these unsung heroines.

“We’re tackling gender inequality in the East End and supporting women with a new centre opening later this year to provide a safe space, free training and wellbeing activities.”

Nominations are open until February 28.

Names can be put forward at towerhamlets.gov.uk. The awards are being presented in April at Whitechapel Town Hall.
