Search the Public Notice PortalA deal means 223 homes for social rent in Poplar will be delivered several years ahead of schedule, Tower Hamlets Council says.
Developer Berkeley and the council have signed an agreement to accelerate the delivery of the homes at Heron Wharf in Poplar, supported by funding through the Greater London Authority’s 2021-26 affordable homes programme and Tower Hamlets’ own housing funds.
Of the 223 homes, 168 will be family-sized properties, in line with the council’s focus on addressing overcrowding and supporting larger households in need of secure housing.
Lutfur Rahman, executive mayor of Tower Hamlets, said: "Tower Hamlets faces some of the highest housing pressures in the country, and this type of partnership working will allow us to offer properties that meet the needs of our residents.
"Acquiring these new-build homes, many of them family-sized, allows us to speed up delivery, tackle overcrowding, and support residents most in need of secure housing.

The accelerated delivery means the homes will be completed by 2029, ahead of the original project timeline.
Heron Wharf is a 20-acre regeneration project that will eventually provide 2,900 new homes, a 2.5-acre riverside park, and 80,000 square feet of commercial and community space.
The site will also feature a food store, restaurant, café, gym, children’s nursery, and retail.
The deputy mayor of Tower Hamlets, Cllr Maium Talukdar, this week visited Heron Wharf to celebrate the partnership and see the rapid progress. He also toured Leven Banks Park and viewed a newly installed public sculpture.
The 22-metre-high artwork is a section of Gasholder 1, an industrial relic from the site’s past as Poplar Gasworks.
