Tower Hamlets Council secured around £1.1million from the government’s Brownfield Land Release Fund (BLRF2) to support the demolition of Albert Jacob House in Bethnal Green.
The council has identified the site as suitable for 53 homes for social rent.
The site was previously used as a council office but is no longer needed following the centralisation of council operations at the new town hall in Whitechapel and smaller hubs across the borough.

Cllr Kabir Ahmed, cabinet member for regeneration, inclusive development and house building, said: "We are always looking for new and practical ways to meet the huge demand for housing in our borough.
"By transforming this former council office into much needed council homes, we are putting this land to better use and helping more local families find a place to call home."
The scheme will include eight one-bedroom, 13 two-bedroom, 23 three-bedroom, and nine four-bedroom homes, along with five non-residential spaces.
There will also be improvements to shared landscaping and the surrounding outdoor area.
Demolition is expected to begin in April, with construction of the new homes scheduled to start in December.
Tower Hamlets is the fastest-growing borough in the country and faces significant housing challenges, with around 30,000 households on the housing register.
