Foster carers in Tower Hamlets are set to receive free council tax.
Tower Hamlets Council announced the news as part of Foster Care Fortnight, a national campaign that encourages more people to become foster carers.
Executive mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “Our foster carers are heroes and vital pillars of our community and the least we can do is to thank them by giving them free council tax.”
The scheme will apply from the 2026–27 financial year, with foster carers receiving a full council tax reduction reimbursed after their first year of approval.
It will be offered in addition to the existing allowances, financial support and training that foster carers already receive, including therapeutic support.
Mr Rahman said: “I would encourage everyone who would be able to provide a safe, loving environment for a child to consider it.
“It is an amazing way of giving back to your community and changing the life of a young person.”
Tower Hamlets Council is also running two weeks of activities to celebrate foster carers and raise awareness in the community.
Events include information stalls, a fostering walk, leafletting and a community event.
