Huge 54-storey Canary Wharf skyscraper planning approval

Areli Developments has secured planning permission for 77 Marsh Wall, a major mixed-use scheme on the Isle of Dogs offering 820 homes across a range of tenures from build-to-rent and serviced apartments to co-living and social rented homes, along with retail space and landscaped public areas.

Located close to Canary Wharf, the scheme was approved by Tower Hamlets Strategic Development Committee and aims to support residents at different life stages and income levels.

Rob Tincknell, founder and chief executive of Areli Developments, said: "We’re extremely pleased to have secured consent for 77 Marsh Wall, which allows us to move ahead with delivering a scheme that brings together a genuinely broad range of homes that make this development the largest of its kind in the UK, alongside a fully integrated on-site affordable housing offer."

The project, designed by Patel Taylor, includes 3,171 sq m of publicly accessible space, with two major new landscaped areas – Dockside Garden and Community Garden – intended for community activities, relaxation, and events.

Nearly 192 sq m of community space will be available for residents and future occupants, along with 430 sq m of retail space to support local businesses.

Mr Tincknell said: "This consent is the fourth major residential lead planning consent Areli have secured within the last 12 months, taking the total amount of units to just under 3,000.

"This approval reflects Areli Development’s long-term commitment to investing in places and delivering developments that are shaped by diversity, inclusion and community. We look forward to continuing to work with Tower Hamlets as the project progresses."

Residents will have access to green spaces, co-working areas, a cinema, gym, pool, and shared kitchens and lounges. The scheme is expected to create around 2,200 construction jobs per year and 151 full-time equivalent roles once complete, alongside an estimated £7.8 million in annual household spending.
