A THIRD-of-a-million workers in London could be out of a job by Christmas, top trade union bosses are warning.
The long-term unemployment, those without work for at least 12 months, is increasing at an even faster rate, the TUC said on Tuesday.
The warning comes with the latest unemployment figures published this week.
Figures for London forecast 325,000 out of work by Christmas, with long-term unemployment reaching nearly 87,000.
The Government must provide further support for those already out of work, with national figures showing unemployment rising to 1.9 million, the TUC urged.
It will hit six per cent of the country’s population for the first time in nine years, say the unions.
They are calling on the Labour Government to fulfil its 2005 General Election manifesto commitment to raise statutory redundancy pay from £330 to £500 a week, as well as increase the tax free limit from £30,000 to £50,000.
