AROUND 45 people were evacuated after a fire in a Poplar tower block on Tuesday night.

The blaze broke out in the first floor of the 20-storey building in Westferry Road at around 10.30pm.

A five-bedroom flat was partly damaged by the blaze which took 20 east London fire-fighters around ten minutes to bring under control.

A Poplar Fire Station manager who attended said: “The flat was fitted with a smoke alarm which went off as soon as the fire started and alerted its residents about the danger.

“We always advise residents to have at least one smoke alarm in each home. They only cost 5 and are easy to fit and maintain.”
