Historic archives of London’s East End tracing back 500 years have now gone online for the 21st century enthusiast or student of history.
Researchers can look up documents at Tower Hamlets Local History library in Mile End from their own home computer.
The history library’s unique heritage collection from the 16th century to the present day includes 20,000 books, electoral registers from 1901 onwards, press cuttings including Jack the Ripper and the Krays, 36,000 photographs and illustrations, 4,000 maps and 4,000 title deeds of property and land transactions.
The library in Bancroft Road, housed in the historic 19th century Mile End Old Town municipality Vestry Hall, is also open to the public Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 5pm, Thursdays until 8pm and two Saturdays a month, for those who prefer traditional research methods in person.
Bancroft Road, off Mile End Road, is between Stepney Green and Mile End stations on the London Underground.
