Fire crews were called to extinguish a blaze in Blackwall last night causing the evacuation of 60 residents from a nine-storey block of flats.

Officers from Poplar received a call at 21:07 to the fire in New Providence Wharf, Fairmont Avenue, which started on the fourth floor of the building.

No injuries were reported with the evacuated residents in police care by the time fire crews arrived.

Breathing apparatus were required for the 30 fire-fighters, arriving in six engines, who used two jet-pumps to bring the fire under control by 22:05.

Crews from Millwall, Bow, Bethnal Green, Silvertown and Shadwell were also involved.

Fire-fighters finally left the scene at 01:20 today.

Watch manager David Southam said: “People need to make sure their smoke alarms are working by testing them regularly.”
