Schools in Tower Hamlets have recorded an improvement on their A-level results with one celebrating that all its sixth formers will be going to university.

A total of 85 per cent of A-level students achieved at least three A-levels at grades A* to E which is a 5.9pc increase on last year.

This year 93 pc of students gained at least two A*-E grades which is a 3.4pc increase from last year.

Success stories include every A-level student at Langdon Park School in Poplar, going to university including Manaul Hoque who will take a foundation course in mathematics at Lady Margaret Hall College at Oxford University.

The one year foundation programme takes just 12 students.

He said: “I’m really excited to be going to Oxford next year - I had never heard of this foundation year programme before and it just seemed like the perfect way for me to find my feet and prepare myself before I (hopefully) begin my undergraduate degree there.”

Felllow student Sayka Islam has secured a place at UCL to read for a BA in Education Studies.

She said: “At first I wasn’t hoping to go university but I’ve managed to go beyond what I thought I could do. I got accepted at UCL. I’m surprised and shocked but it just shows that someone like me who aspires to go university can make it and so can you! I’m really excited”.

Meanwhile Shah Ahmed achieved the best ever A-level results for the school, achieving two A and one A* grades and will study mathematics at Kings College, University of London.

Mayor John Biggs met students at the school and said: “The results this year show that the efforts of our young people have really paid off.

“I’m so impressed with their achievements and I congratulate them all along with the teaching staff.”

Cllr Danny Hassell, cabinet member for children schools and young people, added: “These results are really positive and show improvement on last year. It’s a real achievement and is down to the hard work and commitment of students, teachers and support staff across Tower Hamlets.”
