The number of activities across children centres in Tower Hamlets has been reduced during the London Games.

Mother Clare Qualmann, who takes her eight-month-old son to Mowlem Children’s Centre in Bethnal Green, said she was dismayed when she discovered the reduction in classes.

She said: “The new timetable is down to three drop in activities per week, leaving empty a purpose built and fully equipped space.

“It’s very difficult to find information about the reasons behind these reductions.

“There has been no parent or user consultation that I’m aware of to discuss the cuts or to ask what users’ priorities for provision are.”

A council spokeswoman said: “The reduction in activities is a temporary measure due to the Games and bears no relation to budget cuts.

“Taking into consideration the implications arising from the Olympic and Paralympic Road Network, and the resultant staff availability and transport disruptions, we have set out a more practical timetable for this period for each of the children’s centres.

“Services will resume to normal after the Games.”
