TWO of the country’s oldest weekly newspapers both published in East London have been shortlisted for Friday’s prestigious newspaper industry’s annual awards.

Both the East London Advertiser and its sister paper Hackney Gazette are named in the finals for the title local weekly newspaper of the year’ in the UK Press Gazette awards.

The Advertiser won the title last year and is now up for it for the second year in a row.

Seven of its editorial staff based at Bethnal Green in London’s East End are shortlisted in other categories, news reporters Gemma Collins, Victoria Huntley and Julia Gregory for weekly newspaper reporter of the year,’ and sports writer Jonathan Clegg for sports journalist of the year’ and photographers Joe Greaves-Lord and Spencer Griffiths for weekly photographer of the year.’

BANCROFT CAMPAIGN

The paper’s successful fight to keep the East End’s Bancroft Archive & Local History library open has also made the shortlist for the campaign of the year’ in competition with local weeklies up and down the country.

Its stable-mate Hackney Gazette is also shortlisted for weekly paper of the year’ and scoop of the year,’ while Gazette chief reporter Peter Sherlock is nominated for reporter of the year’ along with his three Advertiser colleagues. Spencer Griffiths is nominated for his photos for both papers.

The Gazette first appeared in Hackney and Shoreditch in 1864, followed by the Advertiser in neighbouring Whitechapel and Stepney in 1866.
