Italian insists squad they have are good enough to climb League Two and training in the week is perfect
Alberto Cavasin doesn’t think playing some of Leyton Orient’s talented youth team will help their current terrible situation.
The O’s under-18s thrashed Southend United 6-0 in the first round of the FA Youth Cup last Wednesday at Roots Hall.
Yesterday the Italian watched his team go down by the same scoreline at Sheffield United in the first round of the famous, old competition at Bramall Lane – another terrible afternoon for fans of the east London club.
“Like I already said maybe to bring in 16-year-old boys to the squad and this group at the moment, can’t be a big help,” said Cavasin via a translator.
Myles Judd and Josh Koroma have already made their debut for Orient and you wonder if they, in addition to other under-18s, deserve a run in the first team now.
Other players who have progressed through the academy, Michael Clark and Victor Adeboyejo, have impressed on loan at non-league clubs recently.
Is it worth giving them a chance to stake a claim because you know all of the aforementioned will have no fear and be full of enthusiasm and energy.
Cavasin was asked whether he would like to sign any more players and replied: “Michael Collins has arrived and he was somebody we needed in midfield because we have injuries.
“But we are not thinking about new faces, the squad is what we have and we have some players not in the team who are very important to us.
“It is very important to have them back and Yvan Erichot is almost ready to come back into the squad and this will give us a big hand in defence. In this moment we have to think this is us and we have to go and achieve results with the team we have.”
The 60-year-old, who has lost five of his six games in charge, insisted training in the lead up to the Sheffield United game was perfect.
But it doesn’t matter what Orient do at their Chigwell base, it is all about what goes on during the 90 minutes on a match day.
Currently they start every game quite well but as soon as they go behind it is a case of how many the opposition will win by.
“This job is not hard because of the work, it is hard because of the results, but I live a good week with this group,” said Cavasin.
“They train hard and there is no case of a player that doesn’t feel happy and nobody makes problems. There is no problem during the week and with this group, but just on a Saturday the results are not good.
“Maybe we are not as tough as we thought. This is what the pitch is saying to us. We don’t have to be cocky thinking we are a team who knows what results we have to achieve. We believe we have a team that can absolutely not be last in the table and the possibility to climb the division is good.”
