Campaigners hold their annual rally to commemorate the racist murder of Altab Ali on Saturday in the park in London’s East End named in his memory.
Hundreds are expected at the rally for the 35th anniversary of his killing in an attack in Brick Lane on May 4, 1978.
The garment machinist’s death lead to a campaign against racist attacks which drew support across the political spectrum including MPs and local councillors at Tower Hamlets.
The former St Mary’s church gardens in Whitechapel, close to the scene of the attack linked to the National Front, was renamed in his memory by the local authority. A memorial gathering is held there every year.
Saturday’s two-hour rally organised by the Altab Ali Foundation at 5pm includes laying a wreath, poetry reciting and solidarity messages.
