HUMAN rights campaigners in East London are backing calls to stop a London man being executed in China.

Amnesty International's Tower Hamlets branch has joined the fight to halt the death penalty 53-year-old Akmal Shaikh is facing.

The father-of-five is believed to be mentally ill and was sentenced to death for drug smuggling last October. His appeal was turned down earlier this year.

Amnesty's East London branch is now backing the online campaign on www.amnesty.org.uk/deathpenalty and is urging supporters to write to the Chinese authorities to call for the Supreme People's Court to halt the execution and allow Akmal to see his family and get medical attention, including psychiatric evaluation.
