Almost 500 trees will be planted in Tower Hamlets this winter.
Because of the density of built-up areas in Tower Hamlets, 478 out of 4,500 trees to be planted in the capital by spring will come to the East End.
The plans are part of London mayor Boris Johnson’s street trees campaign, which aims to bring more greenery to concrete areas to attract wildlife, help improve air quality and also the look and feel of an area.
Mr Johnson promised 10,000 extra trees for the capital by 2012 and once the current batch are planted, that number will have reached 9,500.
