Pre-season friendly: Dover Athletic 2 Leyton Orient 0

Andy Hessenthaler saw his Leyton Orient team taste defeat on his return former club Dover Athletic.

It was the O’s third pre-season of the summer and they conceded once in each half to suffer a 2-0 loss.

Hessenthaler made various changes to the team that started at Wealdstone on Tuesday night and won 2-1.

Only five players that featured in the first half midweek were including in the line-up from the off at the Crabble Athletic Ground.

Sean Clohessy continued at right-back with Tom Parkes in the middle and Callum Kennedy again on the left side.

Gavin Massey started on the right of midfield while Robbie Weir was captain again and in the middle of the park.

Yvan Erichot was included from the off this time while Nigel Atangana and Dean Cox featured from the start.

Paul McCallum, after being left out completely at Wealdstone, was up front alongside Ollie Palmer.

The O’s had trialist central defender Reece Brown on the bench. He spent last season at League One outfit Bury and is the younger brother of ex-Manchester United ace Wes.

Alongside Brown was Alex Cisak, Josh Doherty, Sammy Moore at his old club, Liam Kelly, Jay Simpson, Armand Gnanduillet, Sandro Semedo, Josh Koroma and Myles Judd.

Dover had Jordon Chiedozie among their replacements, who is the son of former O’s winger John.

Hessenthaler’s men got the match underway, but it was the hosts who settled quickest with Mitch Pinnock having a shot blocked after four minutes.

Sargeant was called into action in the seventh minute and fumbled a header, but referee Garry Maskell gave a free kick in his favour anyway.

Two minutes later and Orient’s goalkeeper saved from Jim Stevenson moments after Ricky Modeste had tried to play in Ricky Miller, but was stopped by Parkes.

With quarter of an hour played Sargeant was again involved as Modeste chased a long ball down the left-hand side.

Dover’s winger went down expecting contract from O’s goalkeeper, but the linesman watched the situation closely and gave the visitors a free kick after stimulation from Modeste.

Orient began to settle afterwards and were knocking the ball nicely, but Miller was looking dangerous up front.

He tangled with Erichot in the 17th minute and although it looked a foul inside the box, referee Maskell waved play on.

Miller was giving O’s French defender a terrible time at the Crabble Athletic Ground and beat him again, but Clohessy blocked his effort.

Massey went on a good run afterwards, but was well marshalled by Jack Parkinson before Cox won a corner for the visitors.

It came to nothing and in the 28th minute Dover took a deserved lead after some poor defending by the visitors.

A corner was cleared out to Modeste and his header back into the box was flicked on and Miller, unmarked, tapped in from eight years.

The Whites should have doubled their advantage when Pinnock flicked through to Miller, but he dragged his effort wide.

Massey’s influence was growing and he helped win the east Londoners a free kick seven minutes before half time when he flicked through to Kennedy and Modeste brought the left-back down.

Cox swung the free kick deep to the back post and McCallum could only direct his header wide of goal.

Again Massey was involved just before half time when Aswad Thomas brought him down 25-yards-out.

Cox’s effort was blocked and the ball was worked out to Kennedy, and his centre caused Dover problems.

The ball was cleared out to Massey, he brought the ball down, but couldn’t get a shot off as Nigel Atanagana got in his way and the half time whistle followed moments later.

Hessenthaler made eight changes to the team during the break with only Clohessy, Kennedy and Massey continuing.

Cisak was introduced and trialist Brown partnered Hunt in the heart of Orient’s defence with Semedo out on the left and Moore and Kelly together in midfield.

Gnanduillet was up front alongside Simpson and the French forward immediately tried to have an impact.

He made a nuisance of himself on the left, cut inside and passed to Semedo and his effort was blocked.

In the 51st minute Gnanduillet controlled another long ball, turned around 35 yards out and let fly, but his strike went way wide.

A minute later and the O’s striker was in action again as this time he worked a yard of space and saw his curling effort saved by Dover’s substitute goalkeeper Steve Arnold.

Gnanduillet linked up with Simpson afterwards and the pair combined to set up Semedo, but again Arnold saved.

Millar showed off his potential on the hour mark, dribbling past three Orient players before testing Cisak.

The Australian could only parry and Stevenson headed in, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Hessenthaler’s men responded with Semedo showing his ability when he controlled and ran at the Dover back four.

The winger passed out to Simpson and he set up Moore, but Arnold saved his effort before it come back to Semedo and he lashed just over.

Dover made nine changes afterwards in the 63rd minute and one of them had an immediate impact.

Tyrone Marsh curled a free kick home from 25 yards, giving Cisak no chance and putting Hessenthaler’s side two down against his old club.

Koroma was introduced a minuter later before Judd and Doherty come on with 19 minutes remaining.

Unfortunately the Whites still looked sharper and O’s were struggling to find a breakthrough.

Despite having more possession during the final quarter of an hour, Orient couldn’t pull one back and suffered a 2-0 defeat.
