We are now at a crucial juncture. There must not be a repeat of the reckless actions taken by the government last year.
Any return and recovery for our schools must be embarked on only when it’s safe and with appropriate safeguards in place.
Alongside following the scientific advice and listening to those on the frontline, the government must ensure that every child has the technology required to learn remotely where necessary, and that parents are given what is needed to cope.
Likewise, protecting vital services such as local public libraries, support for learning and day care centres is absolutely key.
I know from my work with constituents that many continue to face financial hardship because they fall between the gaps of the Covid-19 support packages. This must be addressed in the upcoming budget – along with an urgent rethink of the Tories’ plans to remove the £20 Universal Credit uplift.
