THE Archbishop of York is returning to his old patch’ in London’s East End today to open a revamped teacher-training college for 250 students.
Archbishop John Sentamu, former Bishop of Stepney, opens the University of Gloucestershire’s East London campus at Limehouse, after its �8 million refurbishment.
It has three large lecture areas, a prayer room, 91 en suite student bedrooms and library with seminar and private study areas.
Some 150 students are on courses including a Graduate Teacher primary education programme, a PGCE in primary education and an Overseas Trained Teachers course. Another 100 newly qualified teachers are currently on a Masters course. The campus, which became part of the university in 2003, provides a steady stream of newly-qualified teachers for primary schools in Newham, many of whom began their classroom teaching in September.
